Exclusive Wedding Show Case: 116 Pall Mall

The success of the Kosibah 20th Anniversary Events was as a result of the team work of some fabulous Wedding Industry Professionals and many of whom I have already blogged about in my Getting To Know section of the blog

I am so pleased to spotlight yet again the stunning & prestigious 116 Pall Mall, as one of the main sponsors of Kosibah 20th Anniversary Event.

116 Pall Mall was just the perfect setting for such an exclusive event. The Directors Room at the venue was big enough to fit the many wonderful people that responded to Yemi Osunkoya’s invitation to celebrate 20 years in business and also to launch his Bienvenue 20 anniversary collection.

Precisely at 6.45pm, our guests began to arrive and in no time the room was abuzz with conversations, old and new friends greeting each other and chatting away. It was a great opportunity for colleagues in the industry to let their hair down and have a great night out and from all the reports we’ve had back the evening was indeed one to remember.

As the guests mingled delectable bespoke canapés and champagne and elderflower juice were served. The team at 116 Pall Mall pulled out all the stops to ensure that the catering and hospitality was top notch

After the drinks reception the guest where ushered into the second half of the room that had been shielded in sheer luxurious draping revelling a room setting ready for the anticipated fashion show of the new collection everyone had been waiting for.

Kosibah’s new collection was finally ready to be shown off to the 250+ guests, the collaboration of a team of creative people led by Fashion Stylist & Couture Designer Adebayo Jones (a close friend of Yemi Osunkoya), Kasai Fortuna (Hair Stylist), Kemi Kings (Make Up Artist), Lyze Bamigbola-Silas did not disappoint.

I did a feature earlier on in the year about this stunning prestigious venue in the exclusive area of Pall Mall.

I had the opportunity of exhibiting at the wedding showcase that took place on Saturday March 19 2011. It was a stylish & grand affair very well planned and managed by the team at the venue.

The 116 Pall Mall Wedding Showcase is back after a successful event earlier this year and it promises to be an even more exclusive affair.

Taking place on Sunday 13 November, 11am – 5pm, the showcase is FREE to attend upon registration or turn up on the day.

Guests can expect to see some of London’s most respected suppliers, from photographers to bridal wear, florists to specialist caterers. All those who attend will be entered into a special prize draw where they will have the chance to win a selection of fantastic wedding gifts to help make their big day all the more memorable including 50% off exclusive venue hire for selected dates in 2012.

And your truly will be there as well and we will be creating an inspiration room where bride’s can come in and ask us question regarding the planning & styling of their big day

This is a must for any future bride’s diary at this exclusive West End venue. To register your interest in attending please contact the team today.

Getting to know: Elizabeth Solaru of Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium

I am so delighted to introduce this lovely lady on the blog this week.  Will you take a minute with me to Get To Know: Elizabeth Solaru of Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium

The CedarEventress:  Can you please tell me about your business and how you got started:

Elizabeth Solaru: Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium is one of the UK’s premier cake companies. Run by Elizabeth Solaru the only three times winner of Wedding TV’s The Great Cake Bake, it specializes in producing great tasting couture and bespoke wedding and celebration cakes, cupcakes and cookies. With clients ranging from royalty to celebrities, it has developed a reputation of delivering one of a kind, delicious works of art on a plate. There are 4 employees in the business and we are based in Barnet, Hertfordshire.

The CedarEventress: When did you start the company and how

Elizabeth Solaru: Making cakes has always been a deep seated passion and with the encouragement of friends and family what was simply a hobby has turned into a thriving business and the company was founded in 2006

The CedarEventress:  Tell me a bit about the journey to starting the business, your career path before starting the business

Elizabeth Solaru: I have a diverse career background. Firstly as a Senior Scientist (Microbiology) with the NHS, then as a Business Development Director at a private medical centre. I then became a Headhunter recruiting CEOs, Chairmen and board level directors into the private, public and charity sectors, all the while making cakes on the side.

The CedarEventress: Did you always know that you would start your own business?

Elizabeth Solaru: To be honest, it was something I thought I would do ten years down the line. However, the encouragement of friends and family saw me doing it much earlier than planned.

The CedarEventress: Can you please tell us more about some recent work you have produced?

Elizabeth Solaru: This summer has been quite busy for us, particularly with regards to wedding cakes. Our work has been featured in national and international magazines such as BRIDES, Wedding Cakes -A Design Source, WED and in blogs such as GlamYou. We’ve created some really unusual cakes to rave reviews including a 7 tier wedding cake, a replica of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ wedding cake and a 3D Rhino

The CedarEventress:  What are you currently working on?

Elizabeth Solaru: At the moment, I am working on one of our most ambitious cakes to date. A bride has requested a replica of the iconic Sex and the City wedding cake complete with Swarovski crystals and pearls!

The CedarEventress:  So tell me about a day in the life of Elizabeth Solaru:

Elizabeth Solaru: My day varies according to how many jobs we’ve got at any given moment. During the week, a typical morning starts with checking emails and messages, answering queries and other administrative duties. Next we take stock of what needs to be done, which could be anything from making sugar pieces, baking cakes and preparing various icings. Then we work out transportation details and liaise with various venues with regards to. We tend to book consultations and tastings around our clients’ schedules and they usually occur  over the weekend.

The CedarEventress: Describe your clientele:

Elizabeth Solaru: Our clients tend to be people who love luxury products, are very discerning and want something a little bit different from the norm. No matter how complex, they trust that we are able to translate their ideas into reality, meeting and even exceeding their expectations.

The CedarEventress:  What have been the highlights of running your own business?

Elizabeth Solaru: There have been several including being featured in the best wedding magazines and being commissioned to make cakes for royalty and the aristocracy. Ultimately, the look of delight on a client’s face when they see their cake gives me the most personal satisfaction.

The CedarEventress:  What is the hardest part of running your own business?

Elizabeth Solaru: The fact that the buck stops with you. However, it makes you think on your feet.

The CedarEventress:  What has been your proudest business moment so far?

Elizabeth Solaru: Becoming the only three times winner of Wedding TV’s The Great Cake Bake. Going up against some of the best cake makers in the UK and coming out on top has been a very positive experience. The feedback from the viewers was amazing. They all picked up on the fact that on each occasion, I really listened to the client and delivered to their brief.

The CedarEventress:  What, or who, inspires and motivates you?

Elizabeth Solaru: I am definitely divinely inspired. My family and friends also play a huge part in motivating me, with their unconditional love and support. I also have a number of cake heroes some of whom I’ve been very lucky to meet and take classes with. While some clients also bring great ideas to the table, I tend to draw on my love of fashion and nature to keep creating something worthwhile.

The CedarEventress:  Tell us about your involvement in the Kosibah 20th Anniversary event and why you got involved.

Elizabeth Solaru: Yemi has been someone I’ve admired for several years. He is an amazing couturier who oozes class and style and his designs really flatter the female form. I wanted to do something special to celebrate him as well as his achievements and I decided to create some amazing ‘bling cakes’ in his honour.

The CedarEventress:  Do currently have any special offers or any information about your product or service you would like to talk about?

Elizabeth Solaru: We are currently taking orders for wedding and celebration cakes for 2012. In honour of Kosibah’s 20th anniversary celebrations, anyone who orders their wedding cake from us will also get a ‘cake for two’ for their one year anniversary. Also, due to popular demand, we have created a series of masterclasses suitable for cake decorators of all levels who are keen to improve their skills.

Venue Spotlight: The Ballroom at The Dorchester: Looking resplendent at 80

I couldn’t think of a better way to start the week than to share some pictures of the newly refurbished Ballroom at The Dorchester

On Thursday 29th September, The Ballroom Suite at The Dorchester  reopened following an extensive restoration and I was really thrilled to receive an invitation to “Celebrate A New Era Of Glamour

I couldn’t say no to such an invitation could I!

On arrival I could not help but notice the striking luxurious marble staircase which made way to a very light warm welcoming reception area in The Crush Room where the drinks reception was hosted.

Ballroom Entrance - The Dorchester

Laurent Perrier Rose Champagne flowed all evening, served with an endless supply of the most scrumptious canapés.

The Dorchester Gold Room

Finally we were ushered into The Ballroom, the reason we were all there. The transformation in the room is subtle yet striking with the use of three stylish large crystal chandeliers encased in the room’s iconic ceiling domes inspired by the 1930s originals.

The Ballroom has maintained the existing palette of cream, white, blue and gold, whilst at the same time adding a lighter more contemporary touch to appeal to modern tastes

The Dorchester Ballroom

The evening was an opportunity really to see the transformation of the venue and also to meet and network with colleagues in the industry.

And oh did I say that “The Ballroom is now the only venue in London to offer a la carte dining for up to 500 guests.”

Getting to Know: Claire Ogden Designs

It is with much pleasure that I present this blog on Claire Ogden Designs one of the sponsors for the Kosibah 20th Anniversary.

Despite being quite busy ensuring all went according to plan at the event I could not but notice the sparkly tiaras and jewellery that beautifully complemented Kosibah’s stunning new collection Bienvenue20

Claire Ogden Designs specialise in the most exquisite handmade wedding accessories consisting of stunning bridal tiaras, wedding combs, bridal jewellery and crystal bouquets.  When looking for a company that offers a faultless service and breathtakingly beautiful pieces which are all one of a kind and unique in their own right then Claire Ogden Designs should be on your radar All the materials used are high quality and many original or vintage pieces are used to create beautiful designs to complete your gorgeous wedding theme. Her testimonials say it all.

Being the inquisitive person that I am I wanted to find out a bit more about her business and she has graciously answered some questions which I am sure you will all find insightful and enjoyable: Here we go

CedarEventress: So how did it all start then Claire?

Claire Ogden: I am just too creative, I have too much creative energy and needed to find something to satisfy all my bubbling creativeness! My jewellery making REALLY took off, I started to sell pieces and then received a good amount of orders, people come back for more, this is how my business began, I slowly build things up and introduce new ranges, I don’t want to crash and burn! I started the business in 2009

CedarEventress: Would you please tell us about any work you have recently produced

I have created a lot of beautiful bespoke packages over the last year and my latest creation was a stunning bridal bouquet and obviously the collection I produced for the Kosibah Event!

Below are some images of the beautiful peices from the event:

CedarEventress: So what are you working on at the moment?

Claire Ogden:  I work on lots of other jewellery ranges as well as weddings and I have an event coming up which I need to create lots of jewellery for, mainly dramatic pieces that people can wear with their party frocks for Christmas!!

CedarEventress: I would like to know what a typical working day looks like for you.

Claire Ogden:  My weekdays and weekends are very different, during the week I go to work throughout the day, it is up early, help sort the boys, shower, dress and leave the house after lots of kisses and cuddles to get the bus at 8.00am. My wonderful husband takes the boys to school club (prior to school) and continues on to work. The bus stop is across the road (phew) and I catch the bus and spend the hour journey on my phone catching up with twitter, emails and web based info and try to switch off for 15 mins by reading a book (I am an AVID reader!!!) I arrive in Manchester City Centre and do any errands that need running before work and begin my job at 9.30. I work as a Secretary in an Architects Practice, my job is very varied and I have a lot to do, I break for lunch and catch up with my emails, my phones really is my life support! or schedule a blog post but a couple of days I just switch off and read.

I officially finish work at 5.00pm, get the bus home and fill my hour journey reading (I need to switch off on the way home, have I mentioned I LOVE books???? I read one a week…or thereabouts…I am a walking library….I think a lot of my inspiration comes from books, stories, characters…anyway I REALLY adore books! Get home (usually last off the bus, I live in the hills, high up in the moors!! Not quite actually but I do live on the top of a big hill) my hubbie has tea on the go when I get in and we have a big catch up of the day (I speak to Stephen about 100 times during the day even just to say hello, he is my ultimate support and I couldn’t begin to do a quarter of what I do if he didn’t help out, oh and we would all starve too!) All four of us sit around the table to eat tea (we do for every meal and always have) we usually serve in the middle and just dig in; we talk about everything we have done during the day. After tea I might try and catch up with some jobs (this usually doesn’t happen until the weekend) and sit down in my little workshop to schedule blog posts or features, I try to catch up with my social networking and send out emails I have promised (massive to do list!)

If I am lucky I schedule my tweets in for the following day and chat on twitter. Some evenings I design and create other evenings I catch up online…..I do a lot of researching and sourcing online and I MEAN A LOT, this can take hours and hours and nothing else gets done no matter how hard I try.

The boys go to bed about 08.00pm and I try to read for half an hour before I go to sleep…..did I tell you I am an AVID reader….. The top and bottom of it is I probably try to do too much, I work to deadlines at work and have a lot on my shoulders so sometimes I come home so tired I do nothing but sit with my family, we aim to have movie night at some point, usually on a Saturday, family time is very important too.

CedarEventress: Describe your clientele

Claire Ogden: Everyone and anyone, I work with lots of wonderful people and build strong solid relationships with them, because I offer should a faultless service I get lots and lots of repeat business.

CedarEventress: What have been the highlights of running your own business?

Claire Ogden: Being very creative, being confident and knowledgeable in my field and having a good eye for design. I work hard at building up beautiful relationships and making people happy in return I get given amazing opportunities and repeat business as well as lots of new business relationships and friends.

CedarEventress: What is the hardest part of running your own business?

Claire Ogden: Balancing everything with a full time job, 2 hour commute and small children, it is all about balance.

It is not yet my full time business but I feel like it is! I work so damn hard, unfortunately you have to do everything from accounts, PR, marketing, Touching base, designing, sourcing materials and making, busy times! I am self taught, a have to admit I keep at something until it is perfect too, I have very high standards! Sometimes I expect too much from myself!

CedarEventress: What has been your proudest business moment so far?

Claire Ogden: Working with Yemi….without a doubt.

CedarEventress: What, or who, inspires and motivates you?

Claire Ogden: My clients, I could not progress as I do without them. My husband and children are so proud and support me 100%

CedarEventress: Tell us about your involvement in the Kosibah 20th Anniversary event and why you got involved.

Claire Ogden: Yemi asked me to be involved, he sent me sketches of his collections and asked me to create as many of the accessories I felt comfortable with, I went to town and did the lot, it is the best opportunity I have been given and I love the fact that Yemi saw my design flair and believes in me, I would LOVE to work with him again. For that short space of a couple of months Yemi turned my dream into a reality and helped me break through and share my creations, I will never forget him for that! I can’t thank him enough.

I created pieces that were delicate but intricately designed, tiaras that had impact but not over the top and could be worn with any of Yemi’s gorgeous gowns. I used vintage pieces as well as reproduction pieces and lots of Swarovski crystals. Each piece are made uniquely and are OOAK (“one of a kind”), never to be recreated and are all handmade.

I wanted to create affordable pieces that were stunning and individual in their own right, Yemi believed I had done just that!

A spring wedding in a country house

The video I posted yesterday featuring a wedding I did in May prompted me to finally publish the blog on this beautiful & joyful spring wedding. So here is the story…………

The couple Ope & Gbemi wanted a fresh, spring & elegant wedding and they entrusted the design & management of their wedding to Cedar Events

The wedding was held at a beautiful country house Micklefield Hall with lovely views and stunning grounds, Micklefield Hall is an idyllic setting for a spring wedding. The privately owned house and the extensive gardens – with their traditional herbaceous borders and enchanting water features made for the perfect backdrop for the spring time wedding.

The couple’s colours of choice were lemon yellow, lime and gold and it was just the right combination of colours for the beautiful marquee that accommodated 320 guests comfortably.

The ceremony took place outdoors under a large marquee, there were two large pedestal floral arrangement using tulip, calla lilies, foliage and lemon.

Drinks reception followed after the ceremony on the terrace garden where the couple and their guests enjoyed canapés by Favour Catering & Events and champagne while being serenaded by a saxophonist, Wale the great.

At the end of the drinks reception, guests were ushered to the reception marquee for the wedding reception

The tables were named after writers of books the couple had read

The marquee had an array of fresh yellow tulips and slices of lemon in vases invoking a sense of freshness and lightness.

Small round white wax candles were placed were around each centrepiece to give a romantic air to each table and spread a soft light. For a touch of elegance, yellow ribbons were tied around the napkins.

The couple had a ‘sweetheart table’ which was decorated with Garland arrangement of tulips, lemons, calla lilies and foliage

Venue Spotlight: 116 Pall Mall

I have had a really busy and fun start to the month networking, meeting prospective & current clients for consultation, meeting new suppliers (more of that to come later).

In the gallivant over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to see some really stunning venues and one that stood out for me for various reasons is 116 Pall Mall. I was quite taken by the grandeur of the venue and the fact that there is so much more to the venue than the initial impression you might get when you attend or even look on-line at the website.

I had the opportunity of exhibiting at the wedding showcase that took place on Saturday March 19 2011. It was a stylish & grand affair very well planned and managed by the team at the venue.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a venue with so many function rooms and 4 of the rooms licensed for weddings

The impressive Grade I-listed building features a spectacular staircase, which makes for a memorable entrance, and eight magnificent function rooms for up to 400 guests. Under the huge chandeliers, amid silk draping, guests dine at elaborately decorated tables twinkling in the soft lighting.

I can really imagine the civil ceremony taking place here, with guests looking up as the bride and groom exchange their vows. It is a magical place that would be absolutely unforgettable for both the Bride and Groom and their guests.

This impressive venue is both flexible and versatile, featuring a columned entrance, eight magnificent and individually designed function rooms with capacities of up to 400 people, a grand ornate staircase and adjoining gardens perfect for photos in the heart of St James.

Amongst the wedding professionals at the showcase were the über creative cake artist Janet Mohapi-Banks, Makeup Artist Joyce Connor, Photographer Sara Epstein and Florist Amanda Austin Flowers, but to name a few!

I found the day incredibly inspiring and look forward to recommending 116 Pall Mall to my clients.
